Day 19: Canyons, Meteors, The Eagles, and Wigwams

We had a slow start out of Flagstaff sleeping in and doing a little laundry.  It was nearly lunchtime by the time we were on our way.

Our first stop was Walnut Canyon.  This is another fascinating Canyon home area.  Betsy fell asleep in the car before we arrived.   Because Betsy was asleep and my mom was hanging out with her in the car, the kids and I only walked a short way down into the canyon for a view.  It is some 240 steps down.  Do-able even in 90 degree heat.  The problem is walking UP the 240 steps in 90 degree heat and 6000 feet in elevation.  So, Betsy was our excuse not to try it out.

 Leaving Walnut Canyon we came across Meteor Crater.  This is a privately owned historical site believed to be the location of a meteor impact with earth and one of the first recognized of it's kind.   The museum like displays were as nicely done as most National Parks so I would recommend it if you are traveling through.  It was really quite fascinating.

The astronauts practiced here prior to their moon walk.  Some conspiracy theories even suggest that the moon walk never happened and it was actually filmed at this location instead.  hm mm........

Very awesome and very windy!

From Meteor Crater we realized that due to our late start we would not make it to Mystery Location #2 today, and so we decided to stop in Winslow, AZ on our way.  As a certain song from the 1970s made Winslow a hoppin' spot it was fun to stand on the corner of Winslow, AZ.

We spent our evening in Holbrook, AZ.  Coming off the interstate we turned left and ended up at a Comfort Inn for the evening.  If only we had turned right!  I would have totally booked us a wigwam (or two) at the Wigwam Motel.  They looked really fun!  Maybe next time.
